This quarter, students will be focusing on reading, understanding, and responding to non-fiction texts. They will also be reading multiple perspectives of the same account and analyzing how each perspective differs. Please refer to our "Quarter 2 Standards for Parents" document posted on the homepage which discusses more specific skills students will be working on this quarter. Students will need to keep a supply of non-fictions books or articles at home this quarter to use for their assigned 30 minutes a night of reading. Reading logs will correspond with the standards for non-fiction texts this quarter. If you are short on non-fiction texts at home, feel free to visit the public library, use any "Scholastic News" that students bring home, or your student may visit the school media center to check out some books.
Writing
This quarter will focus on students' ability to produce an opinio n piece . Students will focus on taking a stance on a certain topic, clearly explaining their reasoning for why they took that stance, and finally to persuade the reader into thinking about a topic in a certain way.
